This award establishes a standard that demonstrates the level of competence in life-saving to meet the needs of the Surf Coach, enabling more location and job-specific training and assessment. Includes First aid and Lifeguard manuals within the course cost. Please aim to book onto the course 2 weeks before the course date for online logins and manuals to be ordered in time for the course. This payment is the 50% deposit, the rest will be payable on the day. Full course cost £250

Pre-Requisites:

  • Be an existing member of SLSGB
  • Be able to perform a continuous 200m swim (in the pool or open water)

Validity:
24 months from assessment, then 12 month annual proficiency (as long as validity has not lapsed)

Award Aims:
This award establishes a standard that demonstrates the level of competence in life-saving to meet the needs of the Surf Coach, enabling more location and job-specific training and assessment.

Award Learning outcomes:

  1. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to work as a Beach Lifeguard within a beach environment
  2. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills needed to Patrol a Beach as a Lifeguard
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the working practices that are in place when working as a Beach as a Lifeguard
  4. Demonstrate an understanding of the different communication methods available to Lifeguards
  5. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic skills and knowledge to administer basic life support.
  6. Demonstrate an understanding of the skills, knowledge and competence required to undertake first aid in an aquatic
    environment.
  7. Demonstrate a level of competence in paddling a surfboard that would give them the capability to make a rescue as
    required during a surf lesson

Assessment Process:
This course can be Trainer Assessed
Learners will be assessed using a variety of assessment methods. These are inclusive of, but not limited to:

  • Observation
  • Oral Questioning
  • Practical demonstration

Typical format of delivery:
25 Guided Learning Hours delivered over a number of set weeks or over 4 days (please note that 25 GLH is only the minimum
hours that must be delivered, if candidates require additional training then additional hours can be added on)
